After a long absence from the blogosphere, I thought I should come back with a big fat article to make up for it. My fascination with makeup really found an outlet during this crazy, incredible year, when I decided to start my blog back in July. And while I love trying out tons of makeup products for reviews, I enjoy it much better when I discover that one amazing product that I would be content with if tomorrow I could only own one of each makeup product category.
These are products that I discovered this year and found myself using more than others. For those of you who don’t feel like reading too much, I will be attaching each single products with no more than 3 characteristics that explain why I think it deserves a spot on this list. I also am writing this post while on travel, so I won’t be posting photos of my own products as I usually do. But without further ado, here are my favourite makeup discoveries!
10. Japonesque Color Pixelated Finishing Powder
Finely milled, discreet, buildable
This is hands down my favourite “highlighter” right now. It is marketed as a finishing powder, but has this very discreet sheen that I love to dust on top of my cheeks and on my cupid’s bow. The finely milled texture is truly fool proof; it’s easy to blend even when I’m on the go–no more highlighter tape marks! LOL. Oh and, it is perfect for day time, if you want to highlight without looking like a disco ball 😉
9. Maybelline Fit Me Dewy+Smooth Foundation
Natural finish, sun protection, affordable
I discovered this one in the spring, and couldn’t believe something with such a natural finish and hydrating effect could actually exist at the drusgtore. I’ve gone through an entire bottle and I’m well through a quarter of my second one this year. My favourite thing about this foundation is that I can build up coverage without ending up with a cakey face.
8. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara
Voluminizing, long lasting, gentle on the lashes
I first discovered this baby in a Glossybox earlier this year, and had to buy the full size before finishing the sample. It’s a fuss free mascara, perfect for days when I’m lazy or don’t have time to put into my makeup. The bristles on this mascara separate my lashes so well, while also curling them, as the name suggests. As for the creamy formula, it stays in place through pretty much anything, including long work days and party nights.
7. Model’s Own Colour Correcting Primer
Magical, magical, magical (AKA Blurs pores FOR REAL, natural finish AND affordable!)
My most recent discovery of the year, and I am absolutely floored by the quality. While the texture reminds me of any pore refining primer, this one is far better than any that I’ve tried. In short, this is hands down the best of its kind because it does what it says. It not only makes my pores disappear, but it also evens out the skin on my entire face, and gives my foundation that airbrushed look we all love and lust for.
6. NYX Slim Lip Pencils
Highly pigmented, creamy, large colour choice
I don’t know how I never used these before. They are so creamy, yet very sturdy, so as long as the pencil is sharpened, I find these to be so easy to line my lips. I also love using them to fill in my lips, on top of a thin coat of lipbalm. It’s also a great way of owning several lip colours for a fraction of the price of lipstick.
5. ABH Dip Brow Pomade
Long lasting, highly pigmented, GREAT value for money
I was undoubtedly late to the party on this one, and I am not the first nor the last person to say it, but this is hands down the best brow gel on the market. I love to use it not only to fill in sparse areas of my brows, but also to add definition. A little goes a long way with this brow mousse, so I know I will be using it for a very long time before I run out.
4. UD Naked Skin Concealer
Medium-High coverage, non-drying
This is not a new discovery for me, but I felt like I rediscovered it back in february when I bought a different shade. It’s an effortless part of my morning makeup routine, even on the most minimalist days when I only use concealer and mascara. I like to blend it with a BB, after which I will set it with some powder, though I find that my Zoeva concealer buffer brush helps me skip that step without any serious creasing at the end of the day.
3. Gerard Cosmetics Slay All Day Setting Spray
Long lasting, refreshing scent, dewy finish
This is one of those products I know I will always repurchase, because that’s how good it is. I am a huge fan of the UD All Nighter, but I have yet to touch it since I started using this one. I love to use it throughout my entire complexion routine; before applying foundation & concealer, on the BB to blend, after blending to set, and once again after I finish my makeup. This has definitely been a superstar, especially in these winter months when tissues and scarves wipe most of my makeup away.
2. Zoeva Brushes
Affordable, high quality, extremely soft bristles
No, I don’t have ALL of their brushes and wish I did, but this year I’ve built up quite the collection. It all started in January with the luxe shader brush; now, I can say that every time I buy a Zoeva brush, I want to buy more. Not only are they affordable, but the quality is so underrated. My personal favourites are the 142 Concealer Buffer, the 227 Luxe Soft Definer and the 228 Luxe Crease.
1. ABH Modern Renaissance Palette
Buttery shadows, good balance of tones, universal colours
And finally, saving the best for last, is in fact what I consider to be the best 2016 release, overall. It was my first ABH palette, so I was so excited at the idea, but I was even happier when I realised I was using this almost every day. I find that eventhough the colours look similar to many releases, this palette has some very unique shades like Realgar and Burnt Orange which have become staples for my simple makeup days.
